Carragher admits he wasn’t sure about this Spurs star, but he’s seen signs of promise now

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher told ViaSport that he has been impressed by the start that Steven Bergwijn has made to his career in north London after initially being unsure about the attacker.

Due to the absence of Harry Kane and now Son Heung-min, Bergwijn has often featured for Tottenham Hotspur ever since his move to the club in the January transfer window.

After scoring on his debut, the former PSV star is setting the tone for a decent first six months as a Spurs player.

Even in the defeat at home to RB Leipzig in the Champions League last week, Bergwijn produced a promising show and most fans will be hoping to see more of that in the future.

It is still very early days in the young winger’s career with Jose Mourinho’s side but Jamie Carragher likes what he has seen so far from Bergwijn.

“There is no doubt about it, he’s made a brilliant start,” Carragher said. “The goal he scored against Manchester City was a fantastic moment.

“Normally Dutch players you’re not quite sure how they’ll play in the Premier League.

“We’ve had some fantastic players, but also some real flops and can’t make that jump from the Eredivisie to the Premier League, but he’s made a decent start.

“What this Tottenham side lacked in the Pochettino era is real pace in the team, but I think with Bergwijn and Lucas Moura they still have that pace.”
