Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has raved about the quality of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks after his display in the final of the UEFA Champions League almost three weeks ago.
Prior to the showdown against Liverpool in Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino was missing a couple of important players due to injury.
Harry Kane and Harry Winks – who earns £50,000-a-week according to Spotrac – were the notable members on that injury list, but the fact that UEFA scheduled the final of the Champions League almost a month after the end of the league season meant the injured stars had enough time to recover.
Both players managed to pass the fitness test ahead of the Champions League final, as Pochettino handed the returning pair starting spots in the team.
While Kane’s performance after recovering from injury was deemed as an underwhelming one, Gary Neville felt his counterpart, Harry Winks, was actually ‘outstanding’ against Liverpool.
The ex-United star believes Winks should take on a star role in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
“Gareth [Southgate] doesn’t have the players at his disposal [in England team]. Harry Winks is a must moving forward; he was outstanding in the Champions League final, and looked a different level.” Neville told Sky Sports
