Pochettino reveals what’s to blame for that Girona defeat

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has spoken on what he believes was responsible for the relatively embarrassing result against Girona on Saturday.

After enjoying a decent tour of the United States, which saw them succumb to just one defeat to Barcelona on penalties, Spurs travelled to Spain to finish off their pre-season schedule.

January signing Lucas Moura scored from a brilliant free-kick to hand Tottenham an early lead but Girona staged a comeback which saw them lead at half-time.

And after being thumped 4-1 by the Spanish side in the end, Pochettino chose to point out jet lag and the high temperature as factors which caused the defeat.

“I am so happy because at the end it’s a lot of positive things,” said Pochettino

“We cannot see only the result – there were a lot of conditions to play, it was so hot, we feel jet lagged because 48 hours ago we were in America and that is why for me it’s important to say thank you to all the young players because they were fantastic.

“To have this type of game against a top-level Spanish team is always important for them. At 17, 18, 19 years old, to have the possibility to play with the first team – I think it’s fantastic.”
