Pundit chooses the Tottenham star who was ‘absolutely outstanding’ on Wednesday against Dortmund

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has praised Jan Vertonghen for his performance in the Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

Tottenham Hotspur have been under a bit of pressure lately with star players Harry Kane and Dele Alli on the sidelines due to injuries.

The past few weeks have been very important largely due to the fact that any poor results in the Premier League or the Champions League could have easily derailed Tottenham’s season.

Players like Jan Vertonghen, whether they start or not, are required to give their all at times like this.

The Belgium star has not always been in the starting eleven for Mauricio Pochettino and on some occasions, he has been criticised by the Tottenham Hotspur faithful.

But it has to be said that on Wednesday night, the defender produced a magnificent display which saw him score as well.

Even Paul Merson had to eat his own words and praise Vertonghen this time.

“I watched him in the semi finals (of the League Cup) at Stamford Bridge the other week, I thought he was coming towards the end if I’m being honest.” the Sky pundit said

“I watched him, he looked tight around, he couldn’t really move, he wasn’t agile. Fair play to him, I thought he was absolutely outstanding but I’d have Rose all day long. I think Rose is one of the best in the business, he’s top drawer.”
